Our published maps

Our clear and affordable maps fall into one of four series: Companion, Guide, Overview and Theme. We also produce posters.

Companion Series

Our map series providing a geographic context to historic works.

Maps in the Companion series provide context to historic books of both local and national interest, allowing for a fuller understanding of both the geographical and historical elements of these works.

These maps form both a handy companion and a quick reference guide, and as a result they also work as stand-alone pieces, providing information concerning a particular time or theme depending on the companion work.

Guide Series

Smaller maps for linear routes that are well-suited to walking or cycling.

Similar in style to the Historic Overview series, our Guide maps are set at a more detailed scale of between 1:10,000 and 1:20,000 and are published at A2.

Each map in the series follows a route of historic interest and includes mapping along its corridor. A smaller-scale map is also included, showing local roads, rights of way and public transport across the wider area.

Places are colour-coded by age and displayed according to likely accessibility to the site, as well as its general state of preservation. Museums, pubs of historic interest, rights of way and are car parks are also displayed.

Historic Overview Series

A more detailed view of an area through time, provided in a ‘leisure’ map style.

Maps in the Historic Overview series are set at a scale of 1:63,330, or an inch to a mile. This allows them to be more easily matched up with many historic maps of the 18th to 20th centuries.

Each map in the series illustrates a wide range of historic places in a more traditional regional ‘leisure’ map style. They can act as a planning tool for trips out or as springboard towards more detailed local studies.

Further information about all places on each map – from well-known to little-known, from the locations of early stone tool finds to Second World War aerodromes – can be found in respected journals and books. These sources are listed on the map.

Places are colour-coded by age and displayed according to likely accessibility to the site, as well as its general state of preservation. Museums, pubs of historic interest, rights of way and are car parks are also displayed.

Maps with a particular historical or archaeological theme.

Instead of mapping an area or a historical work, the Theme series simply takes a historical or archaeological theme and illustrates various aspects relating to it – offering much more than simple points on a map.
